Can someone who fits the definition of a refugee be denied
refugee status ?
Yes. Some people to who fit the definition may not be granted protection
in Australia if:
- they are protected by another country;
- they had stayed in a safe third country before arriving in Australia;
or
- have committed a non-political crime against humanity, for eg.
they are involved in terrorism, human rights violations and serious
crimes such as genocide.
Refugees and asylum-seekers are people seeking protection in Australia
because they fear persecution in their homeland. A refugee applies
for protection from outside Australia. An asylum-seeker comes to Australia
and, once here, applies for protection.
