How will the Australian authorities deal with my application?
• You lodge a completed and signed Form 866 with DIMA. This
form is to be lodged with DIMA at 26 Lee Street, Sydney with $30
and four passport photographs. It is very important that you complete
the form as accurately and truthfully as possible. If you are unsure
about how to fill in the Form 866, you may need to seek legal
advice.
• After you lodge the application with DIMA, you will receive
a letter confirming that the application was received. It is your
responsibility to make sure that DIMA received your application.
• After you have lodged your application, a DIMA case officer
will assess your claims against the Convention definition of a refugee.
• Applications are confidential. DIMA will not approach your
home government
(including that country's embassy in Australia) about your case.
• Where further clarification is required, the officer may
interview you using an interpreter if necessary. The officer will
then consider all available and relevant information concerning
the human rights situation in your home country. You are given opportunities
to comment on any unfavourable personal information, which is taken
into account when considering a claim.
• The DIMA officer then makes the decision on your application
for a Protection Visa. If you are found to meet the UN Convention
definition, and meet Australia's health
and character requirements,
you will be granted a Protection Visa.
