I am in Australia.

Refugees and asylum-seekers are people seeking protection in Australia because they fear persecution in their homeland.

A refugee applies for protection from outside Australia.

An asylum-seeker comes to Australia and, once here, applies for protection.

If you are in Australia and you fit the definition of “refugee”, you can lodge an application at any office of the Department of Immigrationl and Citizenship.

If you are NOT in immigration detention, you must pay a fee of $30.00 for the application.

There are two types of visas available to asylum seekers. Clicking on the links below will give you a short summary of each type:
